Consider the following sentences.
(23) The woman I love is the one to the right of Tom.
(24) Femeia pe care o iubesc este cea din dreapta lui Tom.
From these utterances one can infer that the beloved woman can be to Tom’s own right (this is the non-deictic usage of the word “right/dreapta”), or to the right from the speaker’s point of view (this is the deictic usage). This is what happens with non-deictic place indications like “in front of/in fata”, “behind/in spatele”, “above/deasupra”, “below/dedesubt”, “to the left of/in stanga” and “to the right of/in dreapta”.
Fillmore (Deixis 1, p.8) states that deictic expressions which contain the words “front”, “back”, “left, “right” (and this is also true of their Romanian correspondents) can appropriately occur in sentences like (25)
